INTRODUCTION:
Sawyer Nursery, Inc. is located in Hudsonville, Michigan. We are an exclusive supplier of perennials plants to big box retail stores in the Great Lakes region.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under supervision by the Purchasing/Planning Manager, creates production plan from data. Maintains current and complete schedules. Oversees production plan from start to finish. Key responsibilities include planning, execution, maintaining the process. Performs other duties as necessary.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Using Sales inputs, enter into the system and manage the annual production plans for container and plug sales supporting the Annual plan management timeline requirements.
- With sales, operation, and grower support allocate the plan to all the Sawyer facilities and contractors in the most efficient manner.
- Resolve, update and manage plan change request daily using the sales and grower teams as resources. Implement “plan change procedures”
- Work closely with the sales team on a regular basis to determine what changes are needed, determined by customer program changes or plant availability.
- Work closely with the contract coordinator to decide what items need to be contracted because of space constraints or growing expertise.
- Manage the orphan plug and surplus container inventories providing information to generate solutions.
- Working closely with the grower task force help create, enter into the system, and maintain all recipes including input types, lead times, over starts and other requirements.
- Strategize improvements to the recipes and plans to create efficiencies and lower costs supporting the company’s goals.
- Build new items and recipes as required.
- Maintain data and produce reports to management as required on a scheduled and requested basis.
- Maintain the planning activities on a 3 year rolling forward basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Three years experience in production and material planning; or equivalent. Experience with perennial products and work experience in a manufacturing setting preferred.
- Ability to determine, understand and manage how financial resources will be spent to get work done, and accurately account for these expenditures.
- Ability to manage projects and independently make judgments and decisions while weighing the relative costs and benefits of a potential action.
- Ability to create, execute and manage a production plan.
- Good time management skills and ability to work independently on multiple tasks with changing priorities.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer software and applications related to job duties.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills to interact with internal and external customers in a professional and courteous manner.
- Active listening and social skills. Must be able to actively look for ways to help people and listen to what other people are saying, asking questions as appropriate.
- Ability to work as a team and interact and influence various segments of the organization.

Currently, we are in need of an Assistant Greenhouse Manager. The primary role of the Assistant Greenhouse Manager is to plan, supervise and manage all aspects of greenhouse production on a daily basis. They will need to ensure that best practices are being followed and resources being used efficiently. Their ability to successfully execute the daily activities needed will directly affect the profitability of all programs. Salary dependent on experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate daily and weekly work schedules for greenhouse, supermarket and planting line.
- Lead and assist with disciplinary actions/issues, conduct performance reviews and ensure personnel safety.
- Provide direction, teaching and motivation to large, small and work group leaders to ensure greenhouse tasks, packing and planting are being done correctly.
- Coordinate with other departments to avoid scheduling conflicts and equipment repairs.
- Coordinate weekly internal transportation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
Hours/Days: Salaried position based on 45 hours per week, willing to work additional hours as needed based on seasonal demand.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or HS Diploma with equivalent experience.
Experience: 2+ years of greenhouse experience in a managerial role or process management role, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar role. The position relies on experience and judgment to accomplish goals.
Abilities/Strengths: A strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Strong interpersonal skills needed to build and maintain relationships. Must be able to convey strategy and motivate teams. Excellent attention to details and solid organizational and communication skills. Strong problem solving skills and flexibility to adapt to changing situations. The ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
Physical Requirements: Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. required, will spend 60% of day on their feet. Must be able to travel between the internal locations, navigate all greenhouse areas. Must be able to speak/listen on the telephone. May spend long periods of time at the computer on occasion.
Environment: Work duties will be performed in the greenhouse office, planting area, shipping/receiving area or outside growing area.
