Assistant Nursery Manager
Assistant Nursery Manager
Who We Are
At Winding Creek Nursery, we grow deciduous trees for landscape and nature restoration projects. Our trees are grown in the ground from saplings that we buy and plant every year. It takes 3 to 5 years for most trees we plant at our nursery to be of salable size. During this time every tree must be staked, pruned, fertilized, and watered to make a quality product. Once the tree is at a salable size, they are dug with a tree spade and sold to our customers, who consist of both retail homeowners and other wholesale landscapers. We are a small company and anyone who works here becomes like family. We love being outdoors, we have a great attention to detail, and most importantly we love trees. It’s very satisfying work, and fun to know that in 200 years someone may stand in the shade of a tree we planted.
Job Description
We spend 75% of our time outdoors. Usually our work is at the mercy of mother nature, so it’s not very often that we have to work in inclement weather. During the spring, summer, and fall most of our work revolves around trees, either maintaining nursery stock or handling trees that are sold. During the winter, we spend most of our time doing maintenance on our equipment in a heated shop, and on warmer days will go outside and prune trees. We are very meticulous about our nursery and our equipment. No two days of work are the same, and we don’t work by the hour. The day is done when our work is done, most days being around 8 hours. Days get longer in the spring and shorter during the winter. For this reason, this a salary based position. We take a lunch break every day and lunch is provided.
Job Duties
Prune Nursery Stock
Stake trees and install tree protectors
Apply fertilizer and sprays to trees as needed
Irrigate trees and monitor irrigation system
Mow nursery grounds, string trim as needed
Assist in the digging of trees in spring and fall
Load trees with equipment on customers trailers
Assist in planting nursery stock, and planting trees at retail job sites
Assist in sales and quoting of jobs for customers
Wash, maintain, and preform light repairs on diesel nursery equipment
Carefully operate equipment such as bobcats and tractors
Run errands such as picking up parts
Keeping shop, office and barns clean and organized
The Ideal Candidate
The work we do is very unique, and will require a lot of training due to the variety of job requirements. Because of this, we are ideally looking for a younger person who shows the desire to make a long-term career working at Winding Creek Nursery. A strong work ethic, attention to detail, willingness to learn, and a love of the outdoors is required. Also, an ability to lift 60lbs. Any prior landscaping or farming experience is preferred, but not a requirement.
